Applicants and employees in positions which perform job duties that may require contact with offenders in the custody or supervision of the Department of Corrections or with youth in the care, custody, or supervision of the Department of Juvenile Justice must meet qualifications pursuant to the federal Prison Rape Elimination Act, 28 C.F.R.115.17 and 115.317.Description of Job Duties:Assists with quality assurance materials sampling and testing, such as concrete slump and temperature and asphalt content and density. Assists with basic surveying activities for roadway location and surveying , using level and level rod to establish elevations, recording and reducing field notes. Reads engineering plans and specifications for construction, maintenance and repair of roadways and bridges. Assists with and gains knowledge and experience as quality assurance inspector for single activities of maintenance or construction work such as laying pipe, concrete coring, earthwork, laying asphalt, and guardrail installation for compliance with plans and specifications. Learns to operate intermediate level equipment such as, but not limited to asphalt distributors, backhoes, concrete mixers, front-end loaders, hydro-seeders, road wideners, tandem trucks, and tow pavers to perform duties such as carpentry work, bridge deck patching, installation of performed pavement markings, servicing of heavy equipment, removal of pavement markings, and patching potholes. Drives truck hauling materials to and from job sites. Operates dump truck with snow plow and salt spreader working snow and ice. Flag for operations requiring traffic control. Performs other duties as assigned.Special Requirements ::Must possess a valid driver's license, Class A commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement prior to appointment into this classification. The employee must successfully complete the KYTC Highway Technician Academy Level 1 or equivalent within one year of employment in this job classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials.Job Group ::ENGINEERING AND GEOLOGICALCharacteristics of the Job ::Performs basic level work and assists with intermediate level work in roadway or roadside maintenance operations. Learns to operate intermediate level equipment such as, but not limited to asphalt distributors, asphalt hot boxes, asphalt recyclers, backhoes, belt loaders, concrete mixers, front-end loaders, hydro- seeders, pipe cleaners, road wideners, rollers, skid steers with attachments, slope mowers, tandem dump trucks, and tow pavers; and performs other duties as required. Assists with technical tasks in support of agency engineering programs such as, but not limited to quality assurance, and material calculations while training under the responsibility of a Highway Technician or Engineer; and performs other duties as required. (Engineering decisions recommended by positions of the class must be approved by a Licensed Professional Engineer under KRS 322.)Minimum Requirement - Education ::High school graduate.Minimum Requirement - Experience ::Must have two years of highway related experience in maintenance or construction.Substitute Education for Experience ::Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, geology, earth science, industrial drafting, design technology, construction technology or a related field will substitute for two (2) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance.
